Obituary for John Herbert Beach

John Herbert Beach, 75, of West Hartford, passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, January 7, 2016. John was the beloved husband of Carol (Dalton) Beach. He was born in New Haven to the late Samuel W and Alicia (Sykes) Beach and grew up in Branford in the Beach Family Homestead circa 1790. John graduated from Branford High School in 1958, the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business in 1962, and received his Master’s from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1973. John proudly served as a Captain in the United States Army. The majority of John’s professional career was spent as a Systems Analyst at Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield where he retired after 25 years of service. Prior to his official retirement John worked as an IT consultant for Bristol Myer Squibb, writing programming for cancer research trials. John was particularly proud of the work he did in this time frame and the contribution he was able to make in furthering the development of cancer research. In his retirement John enjoyed traveling with his wife, golfing, bowling, gardening, UConn basketball, monthly lunches with his Blue Cross retirement friends, and had a passion for classical music. Most of all, he adored being “Papa” to his beloved grandchildren. As a lifelong scholar John loved reading historical non-fiction, following The Great Courses series, and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle, in pen. John was an active member of his church, golf, and alumni communities having served as President of the Rockledge Men’s Club, St. Helena’s Men’s Club, and the Hartford Chapter of the Wharton Club. He was also a dedicated member of the WESCON Investment Club for over 40 years with whom he leaves long time friends who he considered a second family.
John was always known for his quiet, gentle personality, and his wonderful dry sense of humor. As a member of family steeped in history and tradition, John held family in highest regards. He will be deeply missed. In addition to his wife, he leaves his daughter Kathleen and her husband John Lyons of North Andover, MA, his son Jonathan and his wife Elizabeth (Maguire) Beach of West Hartford, and his grandchildren Anna (11), Emma (7), Jane (4) and Charlie (2). John also leaves his beloved niece, Stacy Sibley, her husband Jay Ackerman, and their sons Brayden and Jonah, sister-in-law Kathleen Sibley, brother-in-law William Dalton and his wife Kathleen, 5 nieces and nephews and their families, and several close cousins whom he grew up with in Branford. In addition to his parents John is predeceased by his brother Samuel P. Beach, his brother-in-law Frederic Sibley, his aunt Elizabeth Quinn, and uncles Studly Beach and Herbert Sykes. Family and friends are invited to join the family during visiting hours on Monday, January 11, from
4:30 - 7:00 pm at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 12, at 10:30 am at the Church of St. Helena, Echo Lane, West Hartford. Everyone is requested to meet at the Church. Burial will immediately follow at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be given to the American Kidney Fund, www.kidneyfund.org.
