Anne Frances Keegan (McLean)
Anne Frances (McLean) Keegan, 85, of West Hartford, passed away on Friday, (November 11), at home in the company of her beloved family after a valiant battle against cancer. Born January 13, 1931 in Boston, MA, Anne was the daughter of the late John James and Margaret (O’Leary) McLean. She was the second eldest member of a large, Irish family comprising three sisters and six brothers. Anne carried forward the magical number of six during her marriage to her husband, the late Charles D. Keegan, raising her own brood of six sons and one daughter. Her legacy is one of devotion to family, accomplishment, education and strength of character. She was educated at Salem State Teachers’ College, Salem, MA, and Central Connecticut State University, attaining a master’s degree plus 30. Her education allowed her to support her family after being widowed at the age of 46, also reinforcing for her own children the value of educational pursuits. For the vast majority of her career she was a dedicated and compassionate West Hartford public school teacher, working at both Bugbee and King Philiip Middle schools. Following her retirement, Anne became employed as an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford, a position she held until the age of 81. In 1986, her efforts were recognized with a State of Connecticut Celebration of Excellence Award, which saluted professional excellence and creativity. Anne also was an active member of the West Hartford Retired Teachers’ Association and the Suburban Women’s Club, and was a communicant of St. Brigid Church. She leaves behind her children: son Charles David of Stoughton, MA; daughter Kathleen Keegan and her spouse, Jerry Vargo, of West Hartford; and sons John and spouse Dana Brozinsky of Hamden; Andrew and spouse Stephanie of Somers, NY; William and spouse Kristin of Manchester; Thomas and spouse Beth of West Hartford; and Michael and spouse Caryn of Sudbury, MA. Anne was predeceased by her cherished first grandson Daniel; her beloved sister Esther, and brothers John, Charles and Thomas. She also leaves behind brother Dennis and spouse Judith; sister Margaret; brother Daniel and spouse Mary; and brother Robert. She is survived by 10 grandchildren: Brian; Alana; Peter; Kristine; Patrick; Kathleen; Moriah; Christopher; Nicholas; and Audrey. Also surviving Anne are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews. The family offers a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Rathmann and the oncology team at St. Francis Hospital.
