He is affectionately called Poppy by his 11 grandchildren; Katelyn Burke, Ryan Burke, Owen Burke, Melissa Brian, Caroline Brian, Jennifer Brian, Konnor Brian, Kelley Brian, Molly Brian, Carly Brian and Maggie Brian. He was so proud of every one of them. Born in Boston, MA, the son of James M. Brian and Agnes (White) Brian, Bob was raised in Milton, MA and West Hartford, CT where he lived for over 65 years. Bob is predeceased by his brother James Brian of Boston, MA, Patricia McCarthy of Peabody, MA and Gerard Brian of West Hartford, CT. Bob attended William Hall High School in West Hartford, CT and went on to graduate from Trinity College in Hartford, CT where he earned his Economics and Art History degrees. Bob was a proud member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity and was very active with the Trinity College Alumni Association. Bob was an accomplished runner in high school and college and was always proud to proclaim himself “a miler”. He maintained his passion for jogging late into his life. Following college Bob served as a Sergeant in the US Army Reserve for seven years and was often seen for many years afterward performing yard work in his army boots. Bob combined his keen math ability and engaging personality to become a successful and accomplished Actuary working for the Travelers Insurance Company and Aetna P&C. He went on to become a respected consultant and partner at Conning & Company in Hartford, CT and then at Milliman and Robertson in Wakefield, MA. Since 1985, Bob spent much of his time at Humarock Beach, Scituate, MA. He was actively involved in the beach community being past president of the Humarock Beach Improvement Association and formed many lasting friendships there. For many years as HBIA president, Bob organized the Labor Day beach races and egg toss contest. Bob liked nothing better than family and friends gathering at the beach; enjoying good food, wine, laughter, conversation and watching the spectacular sunsets from his porch. Family and friends liked nothing better than being there with Bob, especially for the annual 3rd of July fireworks celebrations. Many lasting memories were made there. Bob enjoyed golf, kayaking, looking at his boat from his porch and fishing, not to be confused with catching, which rarely happened. Bob will be sorely missed by all that had the pleasure to meet him. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 17, at 11:00 AM at The Church of St. Helena, 30 Echo Lane, West Hartford, CT 06107. There are no calling hours.
