Philip James  O'Connell
Philip James O'Connell of Newington, age 90, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital on December 20, 2016. Philip leaves his devoted wife of 63 years, Gertrude (Barker) O'Connell; his daughter Kathleen and her partner Denis Flannery of West Hartford; as well as his beloved granddaughter Cynthia of Austin, Texas. He was also affectionately called Pops by Seamus, David and Eamon Flannery. Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Philip O'Connell, Sr. and Irene (White) O'Connell; he was predeceased by his sister Marie Perkins and her husband, Harley of Pennsylvania as well as by his brothers-in-law George, Dick and Ray Barker; and his sister-in-law Margaret "Peg" Donovan and her husband, John, as well as a number of nephews. He is survived by his brother-in-law William "Bill" Barker and his wife Sally of Cheshire; his sister-in-law Alice Rowley of Shelton, and his brother-in-law Jack Barker and his partner Paul Egee of Southbury. He leaves behind a multitude of nieces and nephews, across four generations. A methods engineer at Columbia Records and Sargents, he went into retail later in his career. Blessed with a wonderful Irish tenor voice, he sang in the St. Patrick's Cathedral choir in Bridgeport, and his faith was an important part of his life. He was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus St. Brigid Council #14216 in West Hartford, and a Fourth Degree Knight of the Saint John Paul II Assembly Number 3000. His gentle sense of humor and warm concern for all those whose lives he touched will be much missed. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 9:00 to 9:45 AM on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Brigid, West Hartford. .
