Obituary for Andrew James Vogel

Andrew James Vogel
Andrew James Vogel, a long time resident of West Hartford, passed away peacefully at St. Mary Home on Friday, February 10, 2017 after a brief illness. He was 92 years old. Andrew was a loyal, generous and hardworking man who loved to travel, play golf and have fun. He cherished his life, his beloved family and friends and he knew he was a lucky guy.

Andrew was born April 8, 1924 in the Fabyan section of Thompson, CT to his late parents Mary (Note) Vogel and James Vogel. He attended local schools there and graduated from Tourtellotte High School, Class of 1942. Andrew was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and for the rest of his life he was enchanted with flying. After Andrew was discharged from the service, he went to college on the GI Bill. He was a graduate of Nichols College and Syracuse University. It was during this period that he met the love of his life, Cecilia Anne Noonan, who hailed from Lynn, MA. Andrew and Cecilia married July 17, 1948 and were happily together for 51 years, until Cecilia's death in 1999. During his long career, Andrew worked as a production and materials manager at Pratt + Whitney, American Thread, Russell Manufacturing and Whitney Chain, retiring in 1985. Although he was retired and playing as much golf as possible at Rockledge Golf Club with his group of longtime friends, for many years Andrew worked part time for National Car Rental in their offices at Bradley Airport, where he loved being so close to all of those airplanes arriving and departing over his building.

Left to mourn Andrew's passing are the members of his beloved family: his children Rosemary Deshaies of Madison, CT, Elaine Cartland and her husband Richard of West Hartford, and John Vogel and his wife Susan of Grafton, MA. Also, his sister Athena Wright and his niece Diane Becker, both of Scottsdale, AZ, his brother Thomas Vogel and sister-in-law Nancy of Montville, CT, his sister-in-law Edna Vogel of Pomfret Center, CT and several nieces and nephews. In addition, Andrew was the very proud grandfather of Denise Deshaies, Marc Deshaies (Mara), Juliette Deshaies Mead (Jerome), Christopher Cartland (Jennifer), Timothy Cartland (Rory), Ryan Vogel (Emily), Meaghan Vogel and Caitlin Vogel. And as the crown jewels of his life were Andrew's six great grandchildren: Allison Deshaies and Samantha Deshaies, Knox Mead and Madeleine Mead, Alexandra Cartland and Addison Cartland. Besides his wife Cecilia, Andrew was also predeceased by his sister Mary Vangel, his brother Arthur Vogel, his son-in-law Roger Deshaies and brothers-in-law Peter Vangel, Herman Wright, David Noonan, Robert Noonan and
Gerald Noonan.

A wake will be held for Andrew on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2017 from 4-7 pm at the Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT. The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent in Andrew's name to St. Mary Home, 2021 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117.
