Obituary for William G "Bill" Reardon

Surrounded by his loving family, William "Bill" G. Reardon passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. The beloved husband of Janet (Quinn) Reardon, Bill was born on February 23, 1932 to John F. and Mary Rose (Egan) Reardon, the fourth of their five children. Bill attended schools in Hartford, entering the U.S. Navy in 1951. A proud veteran, he served his country during the Korean Conflict. Bill was a member of the American Legion Post 96, where he served as a trustee. He was named Honorary Post Commander in February 2015. Upon his return from the service, Bill joined the family business, The Hedges, in New Britain, one of the first banquet facilities in the Hartford area. Bill continued as proprietor until 1974 when The Hedges closed due to a fire. Bill’s career in the business continued until 2003 and included being the manager of the Officers’ Club in Hartford.
Bill loved being Irish. He loved the traditions, music, and stories. It wasn’t uncommon for Dad to begin a story with, “Don’t laugh now, but…” One of the biggest honors Bill received was being named “Irishman of the Year” in 2004, by the Irish Community of the New Britain Elks. Bill was a man of great faith and was a member of the parish, St. Peter Claver for forty five years, where he served as an usher. Bill led by example and he’d never hesitate volunteering to assist others. One of his favorite volunteer jobs was serving at the House of Bread.
Bill’s interests were limitless. An avid Red Sox fan, Dad stuck with them throughout many disappointing seasons. Bill enjoyed volunteering with Janet at the Bushnell for over 15 seasons. While keeping active was so important to Bill, he enjoyed reading books and spending time at Old Lyme Shores with family and friends. At the center of Bill’s world was his family. A devoted husband and father, Bill was in his glory when surrounded by his family sharing a meal, discussing politics or sports. His guidance, support and humor never waned. Bill was a constant source of love and an inspiration to each of us. He was our rock!
In addition to Janet, his wife of 59 years, Bill is survived by his children, Sharon and her husband Bruce Cabell of West Hartford, William Jr. and his wife Margie of Niantic, and Eileen of Newington. Additionally, Bill leaves his step grandchildren, Karen and Joseph Guice, Ken Cabell, and Scott Cabell, with whom he shared a special relationship as well as two great grandchildren, Brody and Natalie Guice. Bill is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Reardon of South Windsor and many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his siblings Marie, Jack, Ed, and Paul and his brother-in-law Reverend John J. Quinn. He was also predeceased by his step grandson Mark Andrew Wyzykowski,
