Obituary for John F. Croce

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, John F. Croce, 94, on December 10, 2017. Our Dad was a true gentleman, a loyal and faithful servant and who, with our Mother, taught us everything that is right and good.
John was born to Mary DeMonte Croce and Felix B. Croce on November 1, 1923 in Hartford. He graduated from Bulkeley High School in 1941 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He proudly served with the 4th Marine Division throughout the Pacific Theater. He was the recipient of two purple hearts and was a lifetime member of the Iwo Jima Survivors Association. John was humble and private when talking about his service, always saying that the real heroes of the war were the people at home who kept America going.
Most importantly, John was a family man. He and Angela Picano Croce were married in 1947 until her death in 2014. Their strong and loving 67 year partnership was the cornerstone of our family. During their many years in West Hartford, John and Angela were active parishioners in the Church of St. Brigid. John’s deep faith and daily mass devotion and prayer guided him throughout his life. John and Angela also enjoyed their winter home in Jupiter, Florida as well as later years in Rocky Hill.
Their children, Donna and Chuck Landroche, Robert and Donna Croce, and Marybeth and Steve Phelps will always hold them close in their hearts. Their eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren will remember their Mimi and Grandpa forever.
At John’s request, there will be no calling hours. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church, 161Main Street, Old Saybrook, CT, at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 15th. Interment will be private. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105-9956.
We give thanks for the life of John F. Croce.
