Obituary for Dorothy M. Weigel Eisele (Vaughan)

Dorothy Weigel Eisele, 98, died peacefully at Seabury in Bloomfield on March 2, 2018.
She lived a happy and fulfilled life centered on family, friends, church and
a lively sense of community that spanned nine decades. Born in 1920 in Troy, NY, Dorothy
was one of three vivacious and attractive sisters. Her resourceful and creative mother Alice and her charismatic father George Vaughan created a loving household that buoyed her sense of fun and commitment to family life. She loved her sisters dearly and cherished their friendship and support.

A festive ride on a ski train changed her life forever when she met a student studying at RPI, Russell Weigel. They married soon thereafter, moving to Hartford, where Russell eventually took over the family business, Grote and Weigel Inc. Dorothy and Russ started a family, had three sons and moved to West Hartford. Charter members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Dorothy and Russell were founding leaders of the new church.

Dorothy loved being a mother and delighted in the achievements of her sons. She was a constant presence in the bleachers at their matches and games and ran a high spirited household. An excellent cook and hostess, Dorothy was the center of a large circle of friends who socialized in style. Summer vacation sat Andover and Columbia Lakes, and in Weekapaug, RI, underscored the family’s love of activities near the water. She later enthusiastically supported her grandchildren and great grandchildren in their activities. Dorothy was an avid golfer and an excellent duplicate bridge player. She was great company and always game for some friendly competition.

Dorothy was very fashionable. She loved clothes and enjoyed pulling together looks that matched every occasion. Her color sense was legendary and she always looked effortlessly turned out. She enjoyed winters living in Vero Beach and traveling the world. After her dear Russ died in 1996, Dorothy found love again with Joe Eisele of Hamden, CT. They shared a brief and happy marriage at Seabury until Joe’s death in 2007. Joe’s children and extended family embraced Dorothy, which she cherished.

Dorothy was a beautiful woman, inside and out. Her elegance, conviviality, kindness, generosity and sense of good fun will be sorely missed by those who loved her.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Russell Weigel, Jr. and his wife, Jane Reynolds Weigel of South Dartmouth, MA., son David Weigel and his wife Gail Weigel, of Hillsdale, NJ., daughter-in-law Darby Weigel of Norfolk, CT., five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sisters Betty Van Hoesen of Troy, NY., Beverly Cipperly and her husband Bob, of Loveland, CO. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Russell Weigel, Sr., her second husband, Joseph Eisele, and her son, Gary Weigel.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford, CT. 06107 or the Seabury Charitable Foundation, 200 Seabury Drive Bloomfield CT.
