Obituary for Rev. Louis Y. Chow

Reverend Louis Y. Chow, 85, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2017, Divine Mercy Sunday, at home in
Corning, NY. Father Chow was born on May 20, 1932, in the city of AnQing, AnHui province, China, the son of Joseph and Cecilia (Chen) Chow. Graduated from St. Ignatius High School in Shanghai in 1951. He emigrated to Hong Kong in 1979 and then to Connecticut. He studied computer technologies and worked at Cigna Corp in Bloomfield, CT before entering Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CT in 1983. He graduated from Mount St. Mary University, Class of 1988. He was ordained by the Most Reverend John F. Whealon, Archbishop of Hartford on February 25, 1989 at The Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford, CT. He served in the parishes of St. Joseph in New Haven, St. Francis of Assisi in Torrington and Blessed Sacrament in Waterbury, CT, all in the Archdiocese of Hartford. In 1996 he entered the Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux in Vina, CA, before retiring in April of 2001. Fr. Louis also served the Chinese Catholic community, assisting Cardinal Kung in CT. In his spare time and retirement years, Fr. Louis Chow translated many volumes of Catholicism books and prayers from English into Chinese including that of Divine Mercy, St. Mother Theresa, Matthew Kelly, St. Josemaria Escriva, and many others. Survivors include one brother Peter R. Chow of Montreal, Canada, and 9 nieces and nephews in Canada, China, Germany, and US. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and John Chow, four sisters, Margaret, Agatha, Ann, and Theresa, and one nephew Joseph B. Gong. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Fr. Louis Y. Chow at 11 AM on May 2 , 2017, at St. Brigid Church in West Hartford, CT. The Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair, Archbishop of Hartford will preside. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, CT. The calling hours will be between 4pm to 7pm on May 1,2017, at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, CT.
